My name is Kenneth Harrington Dean II. Professionally known as Kenneth Harrington.
I was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in a small town just south of the city. Obetz was a small quaint place with many kind, and a few not so kind, people. There are two sides to Obetz, literally. It’s a town split in two by a railroad track. I did have a few friends from “the other side”, as it was known on my side. I grew up amongst lots of immediate family. My mamaw and papaw Dean were two streets over. My aunt lived at the end of that same street and another uncle and aunt a few more streets over. This was the kind of place you could leave the front door open all day and unlocked at night with the keys left in the ignition of the car and no one would ever mess with a thing. I don’t ever remember my grandparents house being locked. Me and my friends, along with all the other neighborhood kids, would ride our bikes and play in the streets all hours of the day. The only rule was to be home when the street lights came on.
I am an electrician by trade. A musician and artist by passion and I do enjoy making people laugh.
It started out with drums and percussion as a child. My dad is a drummer and I always wanted to be just like my dad so I naturally gravitated in that direction. It became serious when I got to middle school and the band director asked me to join the percussion section. That was also the first year I took to the stage, or backstage rather, as crew in the school stage production. I went on to play in the competition marching band in high school and was in several of the school plays. On stage this time. I was also drummer in a few rock bands as well as drumming for my church worship team. I took up acoustic guitar in my late 20’s, though I would never call myself a guitarist, I do enjoy strumming around. I first took up photography and videography as a serious passion a little later in life. I was 42 when I bought my first “real” camera.
I remember my mamaw Dean always having a camera with her. I don’t recall as to what brand the camera was but it was a rectangle that you would load the film from the back. I had a flash cube, a slider to wind the film and a shutter button. She would carry it in her purse or it was on the side table next to her. She always had it within reach. She loved capturing family history and candid moments. I also remember finding old reel to reel film that she had shot from different places all around the world. Papaw was in the Air Force so they had lots of opportunities to see wonderful places and meet lots of great people.
As I got older I took those cherished memories and decided to take up documenting in still images and filming my own experiences.
Along with being a photographer I have a passion for movies. The silver screen has always been a big part of my life. Going to the theater as a teen with my buddies was a favorite. My sister and I shared a love of film and stage as well. We were both involved in school theater through middle and high school. We also shared a love of pop culture.
I’m not much of a writer, as you can tell from this feeble attempt, but I do have aspirations to direct and act in a production of my own someday. And maybe even help out with the script.
I now reside in the PNW with my wonderful wife of almost 20 years. This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. And there certainly isn’t a lack of photo opportunities here.
